For most Shopify stores, one all-round app plus Shopify's built-in SEO settings is enough. Good starting points are TinySEO (images and speed), Sherpas: Smart SEO (AI meta tags and alt text) and Booster SEO (bulk fixes for large catalogues). Add JSON-LD for SEO only if you need richer product schema. Avoid stacking several SEO apps: they overlap and every app can slow your store.

Which Shopify SEO app should you choose?
Pick the situation closest to yours:
- TinySEO or Avada SEO Suite free plan for images and basics
- Edit titles and descriptions yourself in Shopify; no app needed for that
- Booster SEO or Sherpas: Smart SEO for bulk meta and alt text
- Review a sample of AI changes before switching on autopilot
- TinySEO for compression and lazy loading
- Remove unused apps: each one can add scripts that slow pages
- JSON-LD for SEO for the most complete product and review schema
- Test key pages in Google's Rich Results Test after installing
- Tapita or Sherpas for meta tags in each language
- Use Shopify Markets for hreflang and local subfolders
The apps, one by one
1. TinySEO (formerly TinyIMG)
Best for: Images, speed and technical SEO. Image compression, AI alt text, JSON-LD and lazy loading in one app.
Watch out: Free plan has a monthly image limit; advanced schema needs higher tiers.
2. Sherpas: Smart SEO
Best for: AI meta tags, alt text and schema. Bulk AI-written meta titles, descriptions and alt text, plus JSON-LD and llms.txt.
Watch out: AI output still needs a human review for brand voice and accuracy.
3. Booster SEO
Best for: Hands-off fixes for large catalogues. Autopilot bulk meta and alt-text fixes, SEO health score, JSON-LD.
Watch out: Autopilot can change things you did not intend; check settings first.
4. Avada SEO Suite
Best for: Free on-page basics. Image optimisation, sitemap, redirects, structured data and Search Console link.
Watch out: Many settings; can feel heavy for small stores.
5. SearchPie
Best for: Beginners who want automation. Meta automation, speed tools, JSON-LD, redirects and keyword tracking.
Watch out: Premium tiers cost more than most rivals; overkill for small stores.
6. StoreSEO
Best for: Audits with AI fixes. SEO audit per product with suggested fixes and AI meta generation.
Watch out: Free plan covers only a small catalogue.
7. Tapita AI SEO Optimizer
Best for: Multilingual stores. Multi-language meta tags, bulk editing, lazy loading and JSON-LD.
Watch out: Fewer advanced reporting features.
8. Plug in SEO
Best for: Learning SEO through audits. Regular SEO checks, keyword research, title templates and redirects.
Watch out: No free plan.
9. SEO Manager (venntov)
Best for: Monitoring and redirects. Real-time SEO scoring, 404 monitoring and bulk meta editing.
Watch out: Interface feels dated next to newer apps.
10. JSON-LD for SEO
Best for: Rich results and schema only. Detailed product, review, collection and organisation schema.
Watch out: Schema only, so pair it with another app for meta and images.
11. Yoast SEO for Shopify
Best for: Writers who want guidance. Readability and SEO guidance inside the product and blog editor.
Watch out: Lower App Store rating than most apps here.
Do you actually need an SEO app on Shopify?
Not always. Shopify already creates your sitemap, adds canonical tags and lets you edit every title, description, URL handle and image alt text. An app saves time on large catalogues, adds richer structured data and automates image optimisation, but it cannot fix thin product descriptions, weak collection pages or a lack of backlinks.
What no app will do for you
- Choose which collections and products to target based on real search demand.
- Write unique, helpful product and collection content.
- Earn links and reviews from other websites.
- Fix theme-level speed problems caused by custom code.
That is where our Shopify SEO service and Shopify developers come in.

Shopify SEO apps FAQ
What is the best SEO app for Shopify?
There is no single best app. TinySEO suits stores that need faster images, Sherpas: Smart SEO suits stores that want AI-written meta tags and alt text, and Booster SEO suits large catalogues that need bulk fixes. Choose the one that matches your main problem.
Is there a free SEO app for Shopify?
Yes. TinySEO, Sherpas: Smart SEO, Booster SEO, Avada SEO Suite, SearchPie, StoreSEO and Tapita all had free plans when we checked in late 2026, usually with limits on images or products.
Can I use more than one SEO app on Shopify?
You can, but it is rarely a good idea. SEO apps overlap, can add duplicate structured data and each one can add scripts that slow your store. Use one main app and, if needed, one specialist app such as JSON-LD for SEO.
Do Shopify SEO apps improve rankings?
They help with technical basics such as meta tags, alt text, structured data and image speed. Rankings also depend on useful content, a good site structure and links from other websites, which apps cannot provide.
Does Shopify have built-in SEO?
Yes. Shopify generates a sitemap, adds canonical tags and lets you edit titles, meta descriptions, URL handles and image alt text for every product, collection, page and blog post.
