Shopify SEO comes down to five things: make sure Google can index the store, organise collections around real searches, write unique product and collection content, keep the theme fast, and earn trust through reviews and links. The interactive checklist below covers 40 checks. Tick them off as you go; your progress saves in this browser.
Work through the sections in order. Setup problems block everything else, so fix those first.

Shopify SEO limitations to know about
Shopify handles many SEO basics well, including canonical tags, an automatic sitemap and HTTPS. A few things work differently from WordPress:
Fixed URL prefixes. Products always live under /products/, collections under /collections/ and pages under /pages/. You cannot remove these, and that is fine; Google does not penalise them.
Duplicate product paths. Products can be reached via collection URLs. Shopify adds a canonical tag pointing to the main /products/ URL, so this is managed, but internal links should still use the main URL.
Apps add weight. Every app can add scripts. Audit them twice a year, and see our comparison of the best Shopify SEO apps before installing one.
Blog features are basic. Fine for buying guides, but plan internal links manually.
Moving to Shopify from another platform? Map every old URL to its new address and set 301 redirects before launch. Most traffic losses after a migration come from missing redirects.
Where to start if you only have a day
Confirm Search Console is set up and the sitemap is submitted.
Fix your top 10 collections: unique titles, descriptions and an intro paragraph.
Rewrite the descriptions of your 20 best-selling products.
Remove unused apps and check Core Web Vitals.
Look at Search Console for pages ranking 5–20 and improve those first.
If you would rather hand this over, our Shopify SEO service covers every item on this list, and our Shopify developers can fix theme and speed issues. Running WooCommerce instead? See our WooCommerce SEO page.

Yes. Shopify handles sitemaps, canonical tags, HTTPS and mobile-friendly themes out of the box. Results depend on your content, site structure, speed and authority, which is what this checklist covers.
Do I need an SEO app for Shopify?
Not necessarily. You can edit titles, descriptions, alt text and handles natively. Apps can help with bulk edits, schema or image compression, but each one adds code, so install only what you need.
Can I change the /products/ and /collections/ URLs in Shopify?
No. Shopify uses fixed prefixes for products, collections, pages and blogs. They do not hurt rankings; focus on short, descriptive handles instead.
How do I fix duplicate content on Shopify?
Shopify adds canonical tags automatically. Make sure internal links use the main /products/ URL, write unique descriptions instead of supplier copy, and keep thin filter and tag pages out of the index.
How long does Shopify SEO take to work?
Technical fixes can show impact within weeks. Ranking new collections and products usually takes 3 to 6 months, longer in competitive niches.
Does Shopify SEO work for international stores?
Yes. Shopify Markets lets you sell in several countries with subfolders or domains, and adds hreflang tags so Google shows the right version to each market.
